Gender Pronouns

Gender Pronouns

We’re all celebrating #PrideMonth here at HBTC. So we thought it would be a great idea to create you a little handbook on gender pronouns so you can have more knowledge and a greater understanding of them.

An A-Z Guide to Gender Pronouns. Find out, what is a gender pronoun? Why is it important to respect this? What can I do to help?
What are gender pronouns? A gender pronoun is a pronoun someone uses to identify themselves. It is used to identify their gender. For example; if Jessica had she/her pronouns you may say "Jessica walked HER dog in the park."
Common Gender Pronouns. She/her - Female. He/him - Male. They/them - non binary, gender neutral. She/they - either as female or non binary. He/they - either as male or non binary. Please note this is not an exhaustive list and many of these pronouns can be different to the stated above identities.
Why do gender pronouns matter? It is important to firstly understand gender dysphoria. This comes from the disconnect from one's assigned sex at birth and one's gender identity. Studies have found that deliberate acts of misgendering or dead-naming (using the wrong pronouns or original name) of trans and gender non-conforming people are linked to higher incidents of depressions, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Pronouns and chosen names help to affirm a person's identity and personal conception of their true selves. To deny someone of their preferred name and pronouns would be like to deny them their identity.
How can I be an ally? Respect others preferred pronouns. It is their choice to use those pronouns, not yours. Respect this by using their preferred pronouns. Understanding your privilege is also important. Most of us have some form of privilege, whether that is race, education or sexuality. Being privileged doesn't mean you haven't had your fair share of struggles in life, it just means that there are some things you won't ever have to think or worry about just because of the way you were born. Finally, reach out to your friends. Support them, listen to their stories to better understand them.
