How to Become an ICT Technician Apprentice

The role of an Information Communication Technician is to ensure the smooth operation and management of the IT and telecommunications infrastructure. This includes hardware, software, network services, and data storage, whether it is hosted on-site or provided as cloud services. Their main responsibility is to support the information systems needs of an organization.

As part of their job, individuals in this role regularly engage with a diverse range of users, both internal and external. These interactions occur through various digital platforms, whether through remote communication or in-person meetings.

The Support Technician role involves working at a desk to address system user queries and fix faults in a helpdesk setting. An example would be a Support Technician at a Travel Agent who uses a system to manage customer bookings. If the system malfunctions, it needs to be resolved quickly to minimize financial consequences and protect the reputation of the business. The Support Technician is contacted to report the problem and either fix it or escalate it to an engineer.

Typical tasks in this occupation can include:

  • Assisting in the development of new or modified services 
  • Managing the process of implementing changes 
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory and professional standards 
  • Building and managing systems in virtualised and cloud computing environments 
  • Monitoring system performance and its impact on business performance, security, and sustainability.

The typical duration of the ICT apprenticeship is 22 months. Throughout the apprenticeship the vast majority of your time will be within the workplace. However, there will be some off-the-job training with your training provider.
