Apprentice to Recruitment Administrator at HBTC: Mya’s Empowering Success Story
Mya’s story is a shining example of how apprenticeships can open doors, spark confidence, and build long-lasting careers.
Her journey began in August 2019 when she started a traineeship, which soon led her to enrol in a Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship with HBTC just a month later. Motivated to continue learning and growing, she didn’t stop there. In November 2020, Mya began her Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship, this time joining the Recruitment Team at HBTC—the same team she’s now a core part of as a Recruitment Administrator.
Mya reflects on her motivation to apply for the Level 3 Apprenticeship:
“After completing my Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship, I was looking for a new challenge and to progress onto a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship. I called HBTC and asked if they had any new Administration roles, and they coincidentally had an Apprenticeship position within the Recruitment Team. I was super keen for the position and to work in this industry as my parents work in a similar sector.”
Growing From Day One

Mya admits she didn’t know exactly what to expect at first but was eager to learn more about the recruitment industry and how apprenticeships worked. With support from her supervisor Mackauly, she was trained early on in conducting telephone interviews with candidates—something that significantly boosted her confidence.
Over the course of her apprenticeship, Mya developed a whole toolkit of professional skills:
- Confidence and communication
- Microsoft Office and data management
- Customer service and teamwork
- Attention to detail and time management
She expresses, “my confidence grew significantly especially as I was talking to people on a daily basis.”
She also gained hands-on experience in a variety of recruitment-related tasks, from sourcing candidates and editing CVs to advertising roles and completing H&S assessments with companies. It’s a varied and fast-paced role, but Mya rose to the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, and her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed.
When asked what some of her proudest achievements are so far, Mya stated, “every time I secure a candidate an apprenticeship, it makes me proud”. Further stating, “helping to contribute to our high number of Google reviews as well as completing my IOSH qualification.”
From Apprentice to Administrator
After completing her Level 3 Apprenticeship in Spring 2022, Mya was offered a permanent role in the Recruitment Team here at HBTC. Now, as a Recruitment Administrator, she continues to use the skills and experience she built through her apprenticeship to support young people on their own journeys.
“The Apprenticeship provided me with vital skills, including communication, customer service, and teamwork skills. It has also given me plenty of experience. After completing my Apprenticeship, I was given a permanent position to work in the recruitment team.”
Her story is a testament to how an apprenticeship isn’t just a job—it’s a launchpad for a career.
Supervisor Perspective: Mackauly’s View
Mya’s supervisor, Mackauly, has a passion for apprenticeships, having completed three himself. He saw the potential in Mya early on and supported her development every step of the way.
“Apprentices bring fresh ideas, they help businesses to understand the mind of younger people and help us to know what’s trending so we can keep our marketing relevant and popular.”
He adds, “The benefit of apprenticeships goes beyond filling a role. They help build a positive culture, spark innovation, and allow businesses to invest in people. I’d recommend it to any employer.”
One of the stand-out impacts apprentices have had at HBTC? New ideas like TikTok marketing, creative email campaigns, and a strong presence at career fairs—all of which have helped the business grow and connect with more young people.
looking ahead
Now, nearly five years into her journey with HBTC, Mya is more than just a team member—she’s a role model. Her story is proof that with the right support, ambition, and a willingness to learn, an apprenticeship can be the start of something amazing.
Mya explains that completing her apprenticeship has strengthened her “desire to help young people secure their dream career”, which is truly inspiring.
final thoughts
Mya’s journey shows that an apprenticeship isn’t just about gaining qualifications—it’s about building a career, growing as a person, and helping others do the same. From trainee to Recruitment Administrator, she’s proof that with an apprenticeship, the only way is up.
