ID Needed to Vote
From May 2023 you will be required to bring photo ID to be able to vote in local and general elections.
Democracy is one of our five British values and an important part of democracy is the ability to vote and elect our own government. Make sure you are able to vote from May and ensure you bring some photo ID with you.
If you don’t have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate.
The following are acceptable evidence to allow you to vote at a polling station:
- Passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country
- Driving licence issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or an EEA state (this includes a provisional driving licence)
- A Blue Badge
- Travel cards containing a photo
- Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)
- Biometric immigration document
- Ministry of Defence Form 90 (Defence Identity Card)
- National identity card issued by an EEA state
- Voter Authority Certificate
- Anonymous Elector’s Document
