How an Apprenticeship Helped Katie Build a Career She Loves
Apprenticeships can be a powerful starting point for building a successful career, and Katie’s story is a great example of that in action. Through hands-on experience, dedicated support, and a willingness to learn, she has progressed from a Business Administration apprentice to Head of Customer Services at Annandale Bathrooms, making a lasting impact along the way.
Starting the Journey
Katie began her career through a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship after being introduced to the opportunity with support from HBTC. From the outset, she was eager to learn and gain new skills, stepping into a role at Annandale Bathrooms that offered experience across multiple areas of the business.
Reflecting on her first few weeks, Katie describes them as “fun and interesting,” where she quickly settled into the team, met new people, and began developing her knowledge through real, practical tasks, stating, “instantly, I was learning and growing my knowledge. I was supported throughout my tasks by colleagues.”
Developing Skills and Confidence
Throughout her apprenticeship, Katie built a strong and varied skill set, including customer service, communication, content creation, problem-solving, and technical ability. Her role involved supporting customers via phone, email, and face-to-face interactions, as well as handling financial processes such as payments and refunds.
Alongside this, Katie played a key role in the company’s marketing and digital presence, managing social media platforms, creating engaging content, producing weekly newsletters for over 5,000 subscribers, and maintaining the company website.
She credits the experience with significantly improving her confidence, particularly in communication: “My conversations are clearer and spoken with confidence.”
Achievements to Be Proud Of
Katie’s contribution to the business has been clear from early on. One of her standout achievements was launching the company’s TikTok page, helping to grow its online audience and reach new customers. She also supported major internal projects, including reorganising stock during a company move and promoting new product ranges through creative marketing campaigns.
Employer Perspective
From an employer’s point of view, Katie’s apprenticeship has delivered real value. Her manager, Patrice, highlights the positive impact apprentices bring to the workplace, from fresh ideas to a strong work ethic.
“Katie has already strengthened our digital presence by improving the accuracy of our website and expanding our audience through the TikTok channel she launched,” Patrice explains.
She also notes how quickly Katie developed her skills and took ownership of key tasks:
“She has since become very knowledgeable… and can do more advanced tasks with ease,” adding that this has improved the accuracy and usability of the company’s website, making it easier for customers to navigate.
Patrice believes apprenticeships are a powerful way to build future talent:
“It’s a great way to develop talent that grows with your business and contributes in a meaningful, long-term way.”
Patrice’s advice to other businesses? “Local businesses should absolutely consider taking on apprentices. They bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn that can really energise a team. With the right support, they quickly become valuable contributions – often faster than you expect.”
Progression and Future Goals
Following the successful completion of her apprenticeship, Katie has now progressed into the role of Head of Customer Services. This promotion reflects both her dedication and the impact she has made within the business.
Looking ahead, Katie plans to continue developing her skills, particularly in marketing, while applying everything she has learned to new challenges. The apprenticeship has given her a strong foundation, equipping her with adaptable skills and the confidence to progress in her career.
A Positive Experience

Katie describes her apprenticeship as a highly rewarding experience, supported throughout by both her employer and tutor, Sedaf. Praising Sedaf, she says, “My tutor couldn’t have been more supportive, she made me feel confident and pushed me to get 1 pass and 2 distinctions in my final exam.” She achieved outstanding results and gained valuable, real-world experience along the way.
When asked if she would recommend an apprenticeship, her answer is clear:
“DO IT! If you want a qualification, to learn new skills, meet new people, and get paid, then it’s perfect.”
Katie’s story highlights how apprenticeships can create meaningful career opportunities, benefiting both individuals and businesses by developing skilled, confident professionals ready to make an impact.
