Distinction to Promotion: Zander’s Progression from IT Apprentice to IT & Systems Manager

Distinction to Promotion: Zander’s Progression from IT Apprentice to IT & Systems Manager

Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing skilled professionals while delivering real value to businesses.

Zander’s journey at Vuba Chemical Innovations is a strong example of how workplace learning can build confidence, capability, and long-term career progression, most recently reflected in his achievement of a Distinction and promotion to IT & Systems Manager.

Developing Confidence and Capability

Joining Vuba Chemical Innovations as an IT Apprentice marked Zander’s first office-based role. While the early weeks were demanding as he adjusted to both professional life and study commitments, he soon settled into the role and began to take initiative.

The apprenticeship delivery model proved particularly effective for him. Zander explained:

“For me, this was so much better than attending college every week, as it allowed me to stay in a space where I was able to use the knowledge that was being taught to me.”

Over time, Zander grew in confidence and capability, developing strong problem-solving and research skills while balancing day-to-day IT support with longer-term projects.

Making a Real Business Impact

As the sole member of Vuba’s IT department, Zander became responsible for managing internal IT support, maintaining secure networks, setting up new starters, and overseeing IT equipment and licensing.

One of his most significant contributions was identifying an opportunity to consolidate multiple digital platforms into a single Microsoft 365 environment. Zander produced a detailed business case, presented it to the board, and received approval to move forward with the migration, a project that continues to deliver cost savings and operational efficiencies.

This initiative, alongside the introduction of an internal IT helpdesk and asset register, has had a lasting positive impact on the business.

Recognition and Progression

Zander’s dedication and proactive approach quickly set him apart. During his apprenticeship, he progressed into an IT Technician role, and following the achievement of a Distinction, he was promoted to IT & Systems Manager.

He credits the apprenticeship with giving him a strong foundation across multiple areas of IT and helping shape his future ambitions:

“This apprenticeship gave me a baseline knowledge to start my career and specialist knowledge based on the specific areas of IT that I work in on a daily basis.”

Zander is now pursuing further professional qualifications, with a particular interest in networking and cybersecurity.

Employer Perspective

Vuba Chemical Innovations has seen clear benefits from investing in apprenticeships. Zander’s manager, Galina, highlighted the value apprentices bring to the business, saying:

“We believe that investing in apprentices is an investment in the business’s future.”

She also reflected on Zander’s integration into the team:

“Rather than presenting challenges, Zander has actually helped to resolve several existing issues through the fresh perspective and initiative.”

Zander’s contribution has strengthened Vuba’s in-house IT capabilities, reduced reliance on outsourcing, and supported ongoing digital improvements across the organisation.

Guidance for Businesses

Galina sums up the value of apprenticeships perfectly: “Simply put — do it. Taking on apprentices is one of the most rewarding investments a business can make. Apprentices bring enthusiasm, new ideas, and a fresh perspective that can truly revitalise a workplace.” She highlights that, beyond immediate benefits, apprenticeships help build a strong foundation for the future, develop talent aligned with company values, and create opportunities for people to grow their careers, all while delivering long-term energy, loyalty, and capability to the business.

Celebrating Growth and Potential

Zander’s progression demonstrates how apprenticeships can develop skilled professionals who make an immediate and lasting impact. With a Distinction achieved and a promotion secured, his journey is a strong example of what can be accomplished through commitment, high-quality training, and employer support.
