Turning a Passion for Technology into a Career: Ollie’s Story
When HBTC first met Ollie at a sixth-form careers event, it was clear that he had a genuine enthusiasm for technology and problem-solving. His curiosity about how systems work and his hands-on approach to learning immediately stood out.
Recognising his potential, HBTC partnered him with Jupiter IT Solutions, a company well known for its exceptional training and supportive learning environment for apprentices.
That partnership marked the beginning of Ollie’s journey into a thriving career in the IT industry.
A Journey into Tech
Through HBTC, Ollie secured an apprenticeship with Jupiter IT as an IT Apprentice. From day one, he immersed himself in the world of technical support, assisting clients both over the phone and on-site, troubleshooting issues, and helping set up new devices and networks.
“I first heard about this position through HBTC whilst in sixth form,” Ollie shared. “The motivation to apply for the role came from the work environment and the hands-on approach the guys at Jupiter IT have.”
His early weeks were focused on understanding company procedures, learning from experienced engineers, and settling into the team. It didn’t take long for Ollie to prove himself as a reliable and capable member of the Jupiter IT family.
Learning, Growing, and Succeeding
Throughout his apprenticeship, Ollie developed a wide range of technical and professional skills, from improving communication and time management to learning how to adapt his approach when working with clients and colleagues at different levels.
When asking Ollie how the apprenticeship helped him grow professionally and personally, he says the apprenticeship helped him build confidence. Stating, “I’ve learned how to communicate effectively on all technical levels and understand how to communicate better with stakeholders.”
His hands-on experience extended to working on projects, including client onboarding, Azure migrations, and computer setups. One of his proudest moments was leading the setup of 20 new laptops for a new client, replacing their entire fleet of devices, a project that showcased both his growing technical skillset and his ability to manage responsibility with professionalism.
Progressing with Purpose
Ollie’s dedication and performance didn’t go unnoticed. After successfully completing his apprenticeship, he was promoted to IT Engineer at Jupiter IT, a testament to his hard work and potential.
The apprenticeship not only gave him valuable industry experience but also shaped his career aspirations. “The programme kick-started my career in technology and gave me a fantastic start in life,” he reflected. “It’s helped me get an insight into the world of IT, which has allowed me to choose an area to focus on.”
Continuing to Grow
As he continues his journey with Jupiter IT, Ollie plans to build on his strong foundation by pursuing further qualifications and certifications to expand his knowledge. His long-term goal is to specialise in areas that combine his passion for problem-solving with his growing technical expertise, whilst using his skills to expand his knowledge of IT infrastructure and Cyber Security.
Advice for Future Apprentices
When asked what advice he would give to others considering an apprenticeship, Ollie was clear: “It’s the best way to learn on the job, especially if you’re a hands-on learner.”
His journey perfectly demonstrates the power of apprenticeship pathways, combining practical experience with professional development to turn potential into success.
Appraisal Recognition: A Valuable Engineer with a Bright Future Ahead
Following Ollie’s recent appraisal, it’s clear that he continues to stand out as a consistently reliable, skilled, and customer-focused member of the team. His manager, Lucy, states, “Ollie approaches his work with enthusiasm and a strong sense of responsibility, making him a valuable asset to the team. Ollie excels in onsite visits and pc setups. His friendly and approachable manner makes him a customer favourite. Ollie’s phone manner is very polite, and he understands how to interact with different types of customers and doesn’t speak in IT lingo, which would confuse them. Ollie volunteers for all types of jobs, which shows great promise in his future progression as an engineer. Ollie now mentors the new apprentices to help with any questions or training they need, both in work and as part of their HBTC course. Ollie has been a great addition to Jupiter IT, and we see a bright future for him here.”
