Clothing Poverty Awareness Week: Supporting Emmaus Hull & East Riding
As part of Clothing Poverty Awareness Week, we recently hosted a clothing collection event here at HBTC, giving our colleagues and apprentices the chance to donate any unwanted clothes to those who need them most. Thanks to everyone’s incredible generosity, we gathered bags full of clothing, all to support Emmaus Hull & East Riding, a local charity that’s changing lives every day.
Supporting emmaus
At HBTC, we’re passionate about supporting Emmaus and their mission to help those who have experienced or are experiencing homelessness. We believe that everyone deserves a safe place to live and the chance to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose
Donating to Emmaus’ residential community
For this initiative, we chose to donate the clothes to the Emmaus charity shop on Newland Avenue, Hull, which directly supports up to 30 formerly homeless people in their residential community known as The Orchard. This isn’t just a shelter; Emmaus provides a real home and a supportive network for people rebuilding their lives after experiencing homelessness.
life-changing work
Emmaus Hull & East Riding’s work goes beyond providing beds. They offer tailored support, meaningful work, and a sense of belonging that so many people need to thrive. Their social enterprise model, built around charity shops and collecting donated items, empowers residents, known as companions, to develop skills, boost their confidence, and contribute to their community.
outreach and community engagement
Alongside their residential support, Emmaus runs an outreach service to connect with people who are sleeping rough. Their team, which includes some of the companions themselves, meets people where they are, offering friendly support and practical help to build trust and pathways to further assistance.

making a difference
At HBTC, we’re proud to have contributed to this important cause, knowing that the donated clothes will help Emmaus Hull & East Riding raise vital funds through their social enterprise. These funds go directly back into supporting their community and outreach work, helping more people to find safety, stability, and hope.
If you’d like to support Emmaus Hull & East Riding further, consider donating clothing, furniture, or household goods to any of their Hull charity shops. You can find out more or donate online at Emmaus Hull & East Riding’s website.
