Changes to the Apprenticeship Off-the-Job Training Policy

On 1 August 2022, the minimum volume of hours of apprenticeship off-the-job training will change. This change has been brought about to reflect the changing needs of employers and apprentices.

The change will mean that the minimum number of hours an apprentice must spend on off-the-job training will no longer be linked to working hours. Instead, all apprentices will be required to complete a minimum of 6 hours per week (this figure was chosen as it represents 20% of 30 hours – the current requirement for part-time apprentices).

Whilst this change may seem small, it could have a big impact on how apprenticeship programmes are delivered. For example, apprentices who work fewer hours will no longer be at a disadvantage when it comes to off-the-job training. This change will also allow for more flexibility in how programmes are delivered, meaning that apprentices can receive their training in a way that suits them and their employer best.
