Meet the Staff: Sedaf

Meet the Staff: Sedaf

We’re back with another Meet the Staff Article! Introducing Sedaf, one of our dedicated Tutors and Assessors, who not only supports apprentices across a range of fields but also brings her IT expertise to the forefront, inspiring more women to follow a path into tech.

In this article, you’ll get to know more about her journey, the lady who inspired her career in tech, where she dreams of travelling, and her go-to comfort food!

Can you share a little about your professional background and how it has shaped your role?

I have a 1st class degree in Business Information Technology from Leeds Metropolitan University. Prior to working with Hull Business Training Centre, I worked in the MIS department for 9 years in a further education college. My knowledge and experience of using different IT tools and systems have given me the ability to assess apprentices. My communication skills have enabled me to build effective relationships with employers and apprentices.

What key skills do you bring to your position that benefit our team?

I bring a strong understanding of current IT practices, including areas like networking, troubleshooting, software development, and cloud computing. This allows me to assess apprentices accurately and credibly, ensuring they meet the required standards and are truly work-ready. I use coaching techniques to help learners succeed in their apprenticeship. I manage a busy caseload efficiently, I plan regular 1-1 calls with learners, schedule reviews, and feedback sessions to meet deadlines and quality requirements.

Who has been your biggest mentor or influence in your career, and why?

Meet the Staff: Sedaf - Image of woman in IT.

In my career, my biggest influence has been Dr Kulvinder Panesar (Assistant Professor in AI). She has been an inspiration for me ever since I started my degree. The tech industry has historically lacked diversity, and I have witnessed over the years that Dr Kulvinder has achieved so much in IT and was included in the TechWomen100 Winners List in 2019. She has encouraged women, including myself, to get into technology/computing. She is committed and passionate about what she does. She has, at the same time, prioritised domestic responsibilities and broken barriers of the cultural expectations, which I admire most about her.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

I would love to travel to Langkawi in Malaysia, it has stunning beaches and a rich culture which I would like to explore.

What is your go-to comfort food?

My go-to comfort food is Chicken Masala Karahi (curry) with some naan bread.

If you could learn any skill instantly, what would it be and why?

I would learn how to be diplomatic in my communication, as I feel this is a powerful skill to be able to express yourself clearly.

What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

Prioritise your own goals and dreams.

Wise words that we should all follow! Sedaf’s journey is a powerful reminder that success in IT, and in any industry, starts with determination, support, and a willingness to break down barriers. As a woman thriving in a traditionally male-dominated field, she not only brings valuable expertise to her role but also serves as a role model for aspiring professionals, especially young women considering a career in tech. At HBTC, she’s helping to shape the future by supporting apprentices, sharing her journey, and equipping learners with the skills and self-belief to succeed in any career.

If you’ve ever thought about a future in IT, let Sedaf’s story be the encouragement you need to take that first step. With the right support, you can do it too.
