Supporting Young Minds: Helen’s Journey to a Teaching Career

Supporting Young Minds: Helen’s Journey to a Teaching Career

At St Nicholas Primary School, investing in people and potential is at the heart of everything they do, and Helen’s journey is a great example of how apprenticeships can shape both careers and confidence.

From Pupil to Professional

Helen’s story with the school began long before her apprenticeship. Having attended St Nicholas Primary School as a child, she later returned with a desire to give back, initially approaching the school to volunteer. That initiative quickly led to an opportunity to begin a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, setting the foundation for her career in education.

Now working as an Achievement Support Assistant, Helen plays an active role in supporting teaching and learning across the school, contributing to both classroom activities and wider pupil development.

Head of School Sarah emphasised the importance of this approach, explaining that “we are committed to developing our own staff and building long-term capacity within the school,” highlighting how apprenticeships allow the school to nurture talent in a way that reflects its values and meets the needs of its pupils.

Building Skills Through Experience

From the outset, Helen approached her apprenticeship with a clear goal: to learn as much as possible and apply that knowledge in a real-world setting. Her early experience combined online learning with hands-on practice in school, giving her the chance to immediately put theory into action. Over time, she has developed a strong skill set, particularly in understanding and supporting children with a range of needs. Alongside this, her confidence has grown significantly, allowing her to make informed decisions and use her professional judgement more independently.

Reflecting on her development, Helen shared that she has gained “greater confidence and a strong working knowledge of my school and the children that I help.” Sarah also noted the value of this structured approach, describing apprenticeships as offering “a combination of high-quality training and practical experience,” enabling individuals to build confidence while making a meaningful contribution from day one.

Making an Impact in the Classroom

Throughout her apprenticeship, Helen has worked across the school, with a particular focus on Key Stage 2. Her responsibilities have included supporting behaviour management, carrying out reading assessments, and leading her own phonics group, demonstrating both initiative and leadership.

One of her proudest achievements has been the confidence she has built in supporting pupils preparing for SATs, as well as working collaboratively with teachers. Feeling like a valued member of the team has been a key milestone in her journey.

From the school’s perspective, Helen’s contribution has been equally impactful. Head of School Sarah highlights how apprenticeships allow schools to nurture talent in a way that aligns with their values, while also strengthening long-term capacity. In Helen’s case, her commitment and proactive approach have enhanced classroom support and contributed positively to pupils’ progress. Helen’s proactive approach has also stood out. Sarah highlighted how she “uses her initiative consistently” and has taken ownership of key responsibilities, including contributing to phonics delivery and supporting pupil progress through targeted assessment and intervention work.

A Supportive Learning Environment

A key part of Helen’s success has been the balance between practical experience and structured learning. She described the programme as “a brilliant combination of hands-on practice in school supported by the theory delivered in lessons.” She also credited one of our incredible tutors, Dawn, for the guidance she received throughout, adding a “massive thanks” for the encouragement and support that helped her stay on track and continue progressing.

The Next Chapter

Completing her Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship has given Helen clarity and direction for her future. She now feels confident in her career choice and is focused on continuing to grow within her role. Her apprenticeship has provided not just knowledge, but a strong foundation for long-term development. She plans to apply what she has learned every day in her work, continuing to support children and contribute to the school community.

The school has recognised her progress and is looking forward to her ongoing contribution. Sarah shared that they are excited to see Helen continue to develop, with her apprenticeship having prepared her to make a sustained and positive impact within the school.

Advice for Future Apprentices

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, Helen’s advice is simple but powerful:
“Approach your apprenticeship with an open mind. Be prepared to take on as much feedback and guidance. Everyone is there to help you learn and grow. The more you put in, the greater the rewards.”

Helen’s journey highlights the real impact of apprenticeships, not just in building skills but in developing confidence, creating opportunities, and shaping meaningful careers.
