Climbing the Legal Ladder: Sophie’s Apprenticeship Journey
From uncertain beginnings to a bright future in law, Sophie’s apprenticeship journey with HBTC and Roy Foreman & Co Solicitors is a true success story. Her dedication, growth, and drive have transformed her role and her career.
When Sophie joined Roy Foreman & Co Solicitors as a Level 3 Business Administration Apprentice through HBTC, she was stepping into the unknown. Having recently decided that university wasn’t the right fit, Sophie was searching for a new direction. What she found was not just a job, but a career path that has transformed her life.
“I had just recently dropped out of university as it wasn’t suited to me, and was unsure what was next for me, but once I started this apprenticeship, I soon realised I was where I was meant to be,” Sophie reflects.
starting from the front desk
As the first point of contact for clients, Sophie quickly became a key part of the firm’s front-of-house team. Her responsibilities included managing incoming calls, handling client queries, drafting and sending correspondence, and ensuring smooth communication between clients and solicitors. But her impact extended far beyond day-to-day admin tasks.
In the early weeks of her apprenticeship, Sophie immersed herself in learning the basics of office life, shadowing colleagues and developing a strong understanding of team dynamics. “I was nervous about the process I would be going through and how I would balance my study whilst also working full-time, but soon realised that I was supported every step of the way, which took off a lot of the pressure I had put on myself”, she says.
growing in confidence
Throughout her apprenticeship, Sophie honed vital professional skills, most notably her time management and communication abilities. She also gained confidence, stating, “This apprenticeship has helped me to grow professionally as I have had the opportunity to learn so many new things, which I will be carrying forward with me throughout the rest of my career. Also, I feel I have grown personally outside of the workplace as my confidence has started to build up and I have become more comfortable speaking in larger settings, which previously I did not enjoy.”
Sophie didn’t just complete her apprenticeship, she excelled. One of her proudest moments was transforming an underutilised interview room into a fully functioning meeting space, a project she included in her End Point Assessment. Her initiative was also evident in creating a streamlined spreadsheet to track criminal trial dates and details, enhancing internal efficiency at the firm.
a seamless fit and a lasting impact
From the employer’s side, the experience has been equally positive. Rebecca, Sophie’s manager, described the recruitment process through HBTC as an easy process. When asking Rebecca how the team at Roy Foreman & Co adapted to having an apprentice within the workplace, she shares, “Sophie has been a great addition to our team. Everyone took to her straightaway.”
Sophie quickly became indispensable. From keeping the office stocked with necessary supplies to ensuring the smooth operation of administrative tasks, she consistently went above and beyond. Rebecca states, “We now have a smooth-running administration department. Before Sophie came, that department did not run as smoothly as it does now. She has been a great asset to our team”.

A bright future ahead
Sophie’s story doesn’t end with her apprenticeship. She was offered a permanent role at Roy Foreman & Co Solicitors and has since taken her next step, enrolling in a second apprenticeship focused on gaining a paralegal qualification. With this, she’s setting her sights on gaining more knowledge and becoming a fee-earner.
Rebecca is confident in Sophie’s potential: “She is keen to learn, and we are keen to see how she progresses. She is an absolute credit to our firm. We definitely made the right choice when we hired her.”
a word of encouragement
To others considering apprenticeships, Sophie has this advice:
“Go into it with an open mind, as you will be learning constantly, both through the Training Centre and your workplace. Enjoy it, time really does fly!”
For Rebecca, the message to other businesses is clear:
“If we were to need an apprentice again in the future, we would not hesitate to come back to HBTC.” Also stating that Sophie is “proof that there are excellent candidates out there.”
conclusion
From uncertain beginnings to an inspiring career path, Sophie’s journey showcases the real power of apprenticeships, not just as a route into work but as a launchpad for meaningful growth and long-term success. With continued support from her team and HBTC, Sophie’s future in the legal field looks exceptionally bright.
Sophie is a true credit to herself, to Roy Foreman & Co Solicitors, and to the HBTC apprenticeship programme. We are honoured to have been part of her journey and cannot wait to see what she achieves next. Congratulations on everything so far, and here’s to Sophie’s continued success!
