Meet the Staff: Mackauly Coates

Mackauly is our Recruitment Supervisor/Officer here at HBTC and has been here for over 9 years. We thought it was only fair to get to know him as well as we do!

What is your job title and what are your responsibilities?

My job title is Recruitment Supervisor/Officer. My responsibilities mainly consist of sourcing suitable candidates for apprentice vacancies, providing advice and guidance to staff within the recruitment team, aid employers on the Government DAS portal for funding, ensure contractual paperwork is complete for auditing purposes and most recently conducting health & safety assessments prior to apprentices starting their new role.

What do you love most about your job?

There’s two aspects of my role I really enjoy. One is the satisfaction when your hard work has paid off and you have helped a local company and a young aspiring candidate to connect with one another. The other part of my role I enjoy is the unknown. New challenges every day and new ideas to try and improve as a company.

What was your first role at HBTC and how have you transitioned to the role you are in now?

My first role was to process job applications onto the system, conduct telephone interviews and then cold call potential employers and try to market the benefits of recruiting an apprentice. In terms of transitioning, I do still get involved in those duties from time to time, but instead I have focused on what I enjoy and honed in on what I do best which is sourcing candidates for vacancies and ensuring a smooth process for clients from start to finish.

What’s your favourite hobby outside of work?

My favourite hobby outside of work would have to be woodwork. It’s only recently that I realised I enjoy being practical when I built some storage out of necessity but it turned out to be both therapeutic as it occupies the mind and gives you something to focus on, but also satisfying seeing your hard work turn what used to be planks of wood, screws and paint into useful furniture.

If you had to live in another country for a year, where would you choose and why?

America, specifically Orlando. What’s not to love? Jaw-dropping theme parks and waterparks, stunning scenery, endless activities, gorgeous weather, incredible restaurants and bars, and everyone you meet tends to be friendly and chilled.

What’s your go to comfort meal and why?

Seafood gumbo and home-made rice pudding for desert. This was the first seafood dish I tried, and it was one that my mum only made once or twice a year so it brings me back to my childhood. It’s more nostalgia than anything, but it’s definitely a dish I would ask for if my mum gave me the choice of anything to eat!

Hull FC or Hull KR?

Hull KR. I’m not a fan of either of them, but being born and raised in East Hull and my family business sponsoring them it would be criminal of me to support Hull FC.

What’s your favourite animal and why?

Dogs without doubt. There’s a reason why they are labeled “man’s best friend”. I’ve had three in my life and all three have different personalities that make them unique and I wouldn’t have changed them for love nor money.

Tell me something weird about you

I suppose it would have to be the autistic behaviours I have. I can only eat cereal or soup with the one specific spoon in the drawer. I have often poured cereal into a bowl, poured the milk and gone to get the spoon and it’s not there and I can’t find it so I have threw out the cereal.

Tell me something interesting about you

I am fascinated by historical events and astronomy. I love listening to videos and documentaries about World Wars, ancient Rome, ancient Greece ect. I’m also watching videos about our galaxy and quantum physics. Very difficult to wrap your head around, but it’s mind-blowing!
