From Apprentice to Valued Team Member: Maisey’s Journey at Wolseley Medical Centre

When Maisey joined Wolseley Medical Centre as a Level 2 Customer Service Apprentice, she was looking for the perfect opportunity to begin her career in healthcare while gaining a recognised qualification. Having discovered the vacancy through HBTC, she saw the apprenticeship as the ideal way to gain hands-on experience while learning on the job.

“I saw this position on the HBTC website, and I wanted to start my career in healthcare, so I thought it was a great way to start my career.” Today, after achieving a Distinction in her Level 2 apprenticeship, Maisey has progressed onto a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship and become a trusted and valued member of the team.

Learning, Growing and Building Confidence

Maisey, from Level 2 Customer Service Apprentice, to Level 3 Business Administration Apprentice at Wolseley Medical Centre.

Like many apprentices, Maisey’s first few weeks were spent learning the systems, observing colleagues and building the knowledge needed to succeed in a busy GP practice. Since then, her confidence has grown enormously. Starting on reception, she handled patient calls, booked appointments, processed prescriptions and supported doctors and nurses with patient queries. As her experience developed, she progressed into an administration role, where she now registers new patients, processes referrals, manages patient records and supports patients with long-term conditions.

Reflecting on her journey, Maisey said: “It has helped me grow professionally as I have had to speak to patients over the phone and also in person. Since working here, I have grown so much as a person, especially with confidence, and that has helped me grow professionally also.” Alongside developing her communication and technical skills, balancing work with her apprenticeship learning has strengthened her organisation and time management, helping her thrive both professionally and personally.

Achieving Success

One of Maisey’s proudest achievements has been completing her Level 2 Customer Service Apprenticeship with a Distinction while also successfully passing her English qualification. “My proudest achievements so far are getting a distinction on my Level 2 customer service apprenticeship and also passing English.”

Her hard work has already been recognised by the practice, who have offered her continued employment while she progresses through her Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship. “The apprenticeship has impacted my career goals as it has given me a job opportunity for when I am finished with my apprenticeship. It has given me an idea of what I want to do for my future career.”

An Employer’s Perspective

For Assistant Practice Manager Ruth, investing in apprentices has been hugely beneficial for the practice. “It gave us the opportunity to train someone in the way our practice works, helping them build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for a successful career.”

As apprentices gain confidence, they take on greater responsibility across reception and administration, helping to improve the efficiency of the practice while developing valuable workplace skills. Speaking about Maisey’s progression, Ruth said: “Since joining us as a Level 2 Customer Service apprentice, Maisey has moved on to a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship and has become a trusted and valued member of the team. Her continued development means she is able to take on greater responsibilities, support her colleagues, and contribute to the smooth running of the practice.”

The success of Maisey’s apprenticeship has reinforced the value apprentices bring to the organisation. “Apprenticeships have proven to be a valuable investment for our practice, helping us grow our team while supporting individuals to develop their careers.”

Advice for Future Apprentices and Employers

Looking back on her experience, Maisey is a strong advocate for apprenticeships and encourages others to take the opportunity. “I would 100% go for it. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to learn and work at the same time whilst also getting paid. It is a great way to get a qualification as it helps you develop day-to-day skills and it gives you an idea of what it is like to have a full-time job.”

Ruth also encourages other businesses to consider apprenticeships. “I’d say to give apprentices the opportunity to learn and grow. With the right support and guidance, they can become a valuable part of your team and bring enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and commitment to your organisation.”

Next Steps

Now progressing through her Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship, Maisey continues to build on the skills and experience she has gained, with ambitions to keep developing her career within healthcare. Her journey demonstrates exactly what apprenticeships are designed to achieve, giving individuals the opportunity to gain qualifications, build confidence and develop rewarding careers, while helping employers nurture skilled, dedicated members of their team.

A huge congratulations to Maisey on completing her Level 2 Customer Service Apprenticeship and progressing into a fulfilling career through a Level 3 Business Admin Apprenticeship! We can’t wait to see what you do next and are incredibly proud of your achievements!
