Josh Finds Passion as IT Apprentice at Wren

Josh knew he wanted to begin a career in IT but had no relevant experience. With the help and support of HBTC, he secured an IT Desktop Support apprentice role at Wren Kitchens, working towards the Digital Support Technician apprenticeship. “HBTC were extremely helpful in getting me through the door at Wren. They prepared me for the interview, kept me updated and answered any questions I had.”

Josh says his responsibilities at the start of the apprenticeship were to make sure he was making the best effort to learn about the role, business, skills needed to succeed and be on time with my college work. Since the start of his apprenticeship his responsibilities have developed.

Josh, now a Desktop Support Engineer at Wren, is part of a team that supports 7-10,000 users within the business. This can involve something as simple as a toner request for a printer, to helping manage, troubleshoot and patch their primary systems.

He is proud of the skills he has developed to become an engineer and enjoys finding solutions to problems. He believes that having the methods to access information ensure any IT issues can be overcome. The nature of technology and IT ensures that it is always evolving, so there are always new things to learn. Joshua embraces the opportunity to learn and develop in the role.

“Be humble, you don’t know anything. Never think you know everything because that’s the day you stop learning. Turn up and be keen to learn, take risks and challenge yourself and you will succeed.”

JOSH, DESKTOP SUPPORT ENGINEER AT WREN

Josh has taken on additional tasks and utilised his initiative, to impress his colleagues and receive high praise from his Supervisors. He created a script for the team that allows them to move machines in Active Directory at the point of imaging. This has saved the team significant time when preparing machines for end users. He took on a project to set up IT equipment in their new factory.

The experience with HBTC throughout Josh’s apprenticeship has been a positive one. “I have nothing but good things to say about HBTC and my Tutors. Every step of the way they have challenged me. They have been there to help with any questions I have had along the way.”

Josh believes the apprenticeship has helped him develop as a person. “I have found a passion in my career which was something I was missing in my life up until a year and a half ago. This gives me a purpose and a reason to get up in a morning and be the best version of myself.”

Josh is keen to continue developing and has some ambitious career plans. I’d like to look at moving to infrastructure within the next year. I am hoping this will lead to a move to DevOps two years after that. I will continue to work on certifications in the hope that by the time I am 27 I can go and work as a cloud specialist contractor across the world.
