Trusted to Lead: How George is Building his Future in Project Management

For George, an apprenticeship has provided more than just a route into project management; it has allowed him to build practical skills, gain confidence and take on genuine responsibility within a growing business.

Now working as an Apprentice Project Administrator at Reality Solutions, George has progressed from supporting the project team to managing his own customer project, demonstrating how practical experience, guidance and ambition can accelerate a career.

Finding the Right Route into Project Management

Before starting his apprenticeship, George had already discovered that he enjoyed leading and managing others through his previous role as a gym manager. However, he wanted to understand more about the wider operations involved in running projects and teams.

Looking for a route into project management, George contacted HBTC, where he was introduced to the Project Administration apprenticeship opportunity at Reality Solutions.

For George, the apprenticeship offered a chance to develop his knowledge while learning directly from experienced professionals in a real working environment. “I decided to look at entries into project management and got in contact with HBTC. HBTC notified me of a role in Project Administration, which is a great route in project management.” From the outset, George was keen to immerse himself in the workplace and learn from those already working in the industry.

Learning Through Real Experience

Joining a new workplace can be daunting, particularly when entering an industry without previous experience. For George, the welcome he received at Reality Solutions helped him settle quickly. “I enjoyed my first few weeks. I was welcomed and treated well by the team.”

The apprenticeship has allowed George to develop a broad range of skills, from IT and industry knowledge to communication and working with customers. Crucially, he has been able to put those skills into practice rather than simply learning them in theory. His role sees him acting as a link between the project department and the wider Reality Solutions team, while also communicating with customers and helping to keep projects and documentation moving forward. He has worked closely with colleagues on live customer projects, supporting project updates, attending meetings and communicating directly with customers.

Taking on Responsibility

One of the biggest milestones in George’s apprenticeship has been progressing from supporting projects to taking responsibility for one of his own. “The team has the confidence and trust in me to manage my own project.” Despite being relatively early in his career, George is now coordinating meetings, communicating with customers and working alongside consultants and internal teams to help keep projects on track. His manager, Chloe, has seen that development first-hand. “Despite only being with us for a few months, George is already managing his own customer projects, coordinating meetings, communicating with customers, and working alongside consultants to keep projects on track.” For Reality Solutions, giving apprentices meaningful responsibility is an important part of its approach to developing new talent. “Our apprentices are fully integrated into their teams and take on meaningful responsibilities from day one.” Chloe believes that providing this level of trust and involvement can make a real difference to an apprentice’s development. “We’ve found that apprentices develop fastest when they’re involved in meaningful work and feel like genuine members of the team.”

Alongside the technical and industry knowledge George has gained, his apprenticeship has had a significant impact on his confidence. “My ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients has grown rapidly; my confidence in meetings has also become significantly stronger.” For George, being surrounded by experienced colleagues has been an important part of that development. Rather than learning about project management from a distance, he has been able to observe how professionals operate and apply those lessons himself. “Learning from other people has prepared me more than I could have imagined.” Chloe has noticed the same transformation. “It’s been fantastic to see how quickly he has developed and grown in confidence since joining the team.”

Making a Difference to the Business

George’s apprenticeship has not only supported his own development; his contribution is already having a positive impact on Reality Solutions. As his responsibilities have increased, he has helped increase the team’s capacity to deliver projects while allowing other members of the team to focus on their own customer commitments. Chloe explains: “George has made a significant contribution in a relatively short space of time.” His fresh perspective has also enabled him to contribute ideas and improvements to the business. One example has been his work on the company’s project blueprint documentation, where he reviewed and improved templates used by customers and consultants. “These changes have helped save time, improve the quality of information collected, and make project activities more efficient.” For Chloe, this demonstrates one of the wider benefits of welcoming apprentices into a business: they are not simply there to just learn; they can make a meaningful contribution from the beginning of their careers.

Building Towards the Future

George has a clear ambition for his career: to become a Project Manager. His apprenticeship has given him a stronger understanding of what that career involves and the skills he needs to develop to achieve it. “It has helped me understand the processes and knowledge needed to progress in the role I want and how to apply this to my future roles.” His future at Reality Solutions is already taking shape. Chloe says: “George has always been open about his goal of becoming a Project Manager, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to watch him take steps towards achieving that ambition.”

The business plans to support George, with Chloe sharing, “Once he completes his apprenticeship, we plan to support his progression into a Junior Project Manager role so he can continue his development.” It is a testament to the apprenticeship model that George is already progressing towards the career he set out to build, while Reality Solutions is developing talent that it hopes will remain part of its future.

The Value of Apprenticeships

Reality Solutions has supported apprentices for many years, and Chloe believes the benefits extend well beyond the individual. The company has seen former apprentices remain with the organisation and become valued members of the team, helping create a strong and knowledgeable workforce for the future.

For George, the value of the apprenticeship comes down to the opportunity to learn by doing.

“I think the apprenticeship programme is the perfect way to gain industry experience and expand knowledge.” He believes that being immersed in a real workplace provides something that online learning alone cannot replicate. George’s journey demonstrates what can happen when ambition meets opportunity. He has progressed from someone looking to break into project management to an apprentice trusted to manage his own customer projects, and he is only just getting started.
